Moisture Content Determination
METHODOLOGY
MOISTURE CONTENT DETERMINATION
_______________________________________
Objective :
1) To determine the water (moisture) content of soils.
Apparatus :
1) Drying oven
2) Balance
3) Crucible
4) Gloves
5) Spatula.
Procedure :
(1) Record the crucible number as 1 and 2. Determine and record the mass of an empty, clean, and dry crucible.(MC)
(2) Place the moist soil in the crucibles. Determine and record the mass of the crucible (now containing the moist soil) ( MCMS ).
(3) Place the crucible (containing the moist soil) in the drying oven that is set at 105 °C. Leave it in the oven overnight.
(4) Remove the crucible. Allow it to cool to room temperature. Determine and record the mass of the crucible (containing the dry soil) ( MCDS ).
(5) Empty the crucible and clean it.
Data Analysis :
(1) Determine the mass of soil solids.
M S = MCDS − M SC
(2) Determine the mass of pore water.
MW = MCMS − MCDS
(3) Determine the water content.
w = MW/Ms x100

Materials and Apparatus~
1. First and foremost, we need the composting container to compost our waste such as flower pots and bins. These container help us to know the volume of the production of composting. If you don't have containers, you may compost on the backyard land. In this project, we use flower pots for the composting.
2. Secondly, the important material that we must have is the soil. Soil is the place where the degradation of waste take place. In selecting the soil, we need to select the soil that contains organic materials which can be found at the first layer of the soil because this layer has a lot population of micro-organism such as worm that helping in composting process.

3. Thirdly, the selection of the organic waste. For this project the waste that we choose is vegetables waste which had been collected from the supermarket and veggies stalls. As for recommendation, used the food waste from home for a better results.
4. Lastly, the uses of charcoal
for the composting. The charcoal powder was used to absorb the unfriendly smell when the decomposing take place. Other than that, you can also plant the Pandan Tree, English Ivy, Snake plant and Limau Purut Tree to reduce the smell.

Therefore, we had to clean the composting site area by help of the gardener tools such as scissors, hoes and rake to cut those weeds and plants.
And finally.. the compost site was being clean :)

What Is Compost??
All dead plants will rot down and decompose if you leave them alone, which they turning into a soil-like material called compost.
Basically,

Plant Waste ( or Organic Waste) + moisture + warmth + air + micro-organism + time = compost.
Therefore, composting is a natural way of recycling and the best recycler is nature itself!
